The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) is an intergovernmental knowledge and learning centre, established in 1983, working on behalf of the people of the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH). It is based in Kathmandu, Nepal and works in and for its eight regional member countries (RMCs) – Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Pakistan. With a primary focus on sustainable mountain development, ICIMOD has established an Action Area on Air to work on improving the air quality in the region.

ICIMOD is actively addressing the severe air pollution crisis in the HKH through its interventions on ‘Air Quality Monitoring’ and ‘Air Pollution Mitigation’. The organization's work focuses on generating scientific evidence on pollution sources, improving data accessibility, identifying, promoting and testing regionally relevant solutions, and strengthening science-policy linkages to support effective air quality management. These include, but are not limited to, cleaner fuels, energy-efficient technologies, and sustainable industrial practices. ICIMOD also supports government partners from its RMCs in supplementing their skills in air quality observation by expanding ground-based monitoring, integrating satellite data, and advancing high-resolution modelling to build capacity for informed action. By engaging with regional and global partners, ICIMOD aims to drive ambitious actions that protect public health, safeguard ecosystems, and combat climate change.
