Stockholm Environment Institute
https://www.sei.org/topics/air/The Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) is a globally recognized, independent research and policy institute established in 1989 with the mission to promote sustainable development and environmental protection. With seven affiliate offices worldwide, SEI specializes in addressing critical environmental issues, including air quality, climate change, energy systems, and sustainable resource management. SEI works to bridge science and policy by providing actionable knowledge that supports decision-making and fosters transformative change toward sustainability.
SEI has been at the forefront of air pollution research and management, particularly through its innovative initiatives aimed at integrating air quality improvements with climate action. SEI has over a decade of experience working on air pollution issues and in 2011 were co-authors of the Integrated Assessment of Black Carbon and Tropospheric Ozone which led to the formation of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition. Since then, SEI has supported numerous countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America to take integrated action on air pollutants and greenhouse gases. SEI focuses on advancing scientific methods for quantifying and assessing air pollution impacts, providing tools for policymakers to better understand pollution sources, and strengthening capacity in air pollution mitigation and management.
SEI has worked on the interaction of gender and socio-economic characteristics with occupational air pollution exposure in Southeast Asia and has also worked with the private sector to develop A Practical Guide for Business: Air Pollutant Emission Assessment. This guide was launched at COP27 in collaboration with the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) enables businesses to measure air pollutant emissions across their value chains in sectors such as electricity generation, transport, agriculture, industrial processes, and waste. The guide has been adopted by the World Economic Forum’s Alliance for Clean Air. In 2025, SEI contributed to the UNEP Clean Air and Climate Solutions for ASEAN report which outlines a strategic approach to improving air quality while combatting climate change in the ASEAN region.
Finally, SEI actively engages in global dialogues on clean air through partnerships with organizations like UNEP and CCAC. By aligning its efforts with international frameworks such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), SEI ensures that its work contributes to global targets for clean air (SDG 11) and climate action (SDG 13).
