The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and the UN Environment Programme are organizing the 6th observance event of the International Day of Clean Air for blue skies to highlight the critical importance of clean air for health, well-being, and sustainable development. Air pollution remains one of the most significant environmental health risks, causing millions of premature deaths annually and impacting economies and communities alike.

The event will also underscore the strong link between clean air and sustainable energy, highlighting how transitioning to cleaner, renewable energy sources is fundamental to reducing air pollution and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Sustainable energy not only mitigates carbon dioxide and air pollution emissions but also supports resilient economies and healthier communities by providing equitable access to clean power. In this context, the event will be organized in conjunction with the 4thsession of the ESCAP Committee on Energy. This connection is vital for addressing the disproportionate burden of air pollution on vulnerable populations, particularly in low-income urban areas where pollution levels are highest and opportunities for outdoor activity are limited. The observance will also support the UN Issue-Based Coalition on Raising Ambitions on Climate Action in Asia and the Pacific, specifically on advancing regional coordination on clean air action. By promoting clean energy solutions, this event aims to foster healthier environments where people can breathe freely and participate fully in social and economic life.
